Submissions – Strange Altars

Each issue exists in four versions: digital, audio, print and boxed (“object-based”).

Some content is exclusive to each format due to the physical and technological limitations of each type of media. Collaboration between contributors is encouraged and facilitated to help translate work from one format to another. Please do not feel obligated to think within the confines of “printable on paper” when considering material for submission. Serial/sequential/multi-issue material is also welcome.

While each issue has a theme which we hope informs and unifies the work, the theme does not need to be explicit or even evident in submitted work.

Strange Altars is published semi-annually and submissions are accepted year-round.
Submit before January 30, 2015 to be considered for Issue No. 2: Magic.

Print

The Print Edition includes innovative visual and performance art, comics, graphics, photography, challenging and experimental fiction, poetry, memoir, creative nonfiction, essays, and other work that encompasses multiple categories (or defies categorization). The Print Edition is primarily assembled and finished by hand, and is therefore available in a limited quantity, but the PDF version of each issue is available indefinitely.

Digital

The Digital Edition of each issue exists online, and includes site-specific video, audio, and animation, as well as works chosen to complement (or made expressly for) simultaneous experience alongside visual art and text-based contributions: visual and performance art, comics, graphics, photography, challenging and experimental fiction, poetry, memoir, creative nonfiction, essays, and other work that encompasses multiple categories (or defies categorization).

Audio

The Audio Edition includes music tracks, spoken word, audio recordings of all text-based content from the issue, and rich, immersive descriptions/audio interpretations of visual art pieces.

Boxed

The Boxed Edition includes the hand-finished Print Edition, as well as objects and ephemera evolving from the creation of the stories within Strange Altars, including one of a kind objects, limited edition/semi-handmade items, and mechanical reproductions (such as photographic prints, hand-colored illustrations, handmade objects, scraps, and workshop floor sweepings). The Boxed Edition is available in extremely limited quantities, and each one is unique.
